Diagnosis
BIOPSY - the only way to determine mesothelioma. Biopsy is a procedure to remove small portion of tissue for examination.
- Needle aspiration - a small needle inserted into chest or abdomen to remove fluid or a piece of tissue.
- Thoracoscopy - it allows the doctor to see inside the chest. It is a procedure that allows a tiny video camera and a special tool to cut a tissue to enter the chest cavity through a small incisions between ribs.
- Laparoscopy - it allows doctor to see inside the abdomen. A tiny camera and a special tool enters the abdomen through small incision to cut for a small tissue.
- Thoracotomy - this type of surgery opens the chest between the ribs to check for signs of disease. The surgeon removes sample for testing.
- Laparotomy - this type of surgery opens the abdomen to check for signs of disease. The surgeon removes sample for testing.
- These are the test to help determining the stage of cancer:
- Chest X-ray
- CT scans of the chest and abdomen
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Positron emission tomography (PET)
