Different Types of Acne










    Two Common Types of Acne
    • Acne Vulgaris - most common among adolescents and young adults
    • Acne Conglobata - develops later in life

    Acne Vulgaris

    Almost all teenagers experience to have a few comedones at least once in their lifetime. The difference is not on the incidence but rather in severity and conditions.
    Lesions of Acne Vulgaris persist primarily on face, neck, back, chest and shoulder. Acne may consist of comedones, or inflammatory lesions.

    Men - incidence is greater in men. It is due to genetic predisposition and stress; which play an important role in acne condition but its link is still unknown. Stress somehow related to increasing androgen production.
    Women - begins earlier in life until 30 years of age. Acne worsen during the week before menses.


    The cause of Acne Vulgaris is still unknown but some factors contributes to acquiring acne like:
    • influence of androgens to sebaceous cell
    • increased keratinizing epidermal cells
    • increased sebum production
    • decreased linoleic acid in the sebum
    • propionibacterium acnes
    Important information about Acne
    • acne is an infectious, fatty diets, chocolates does not cause acne
    • too much scrubbing can worsen the condition of acne
    • affected parts should be washed gently and patted dry
    • used water-based rather than oil-based cosmetics and moisturizers
    • do not squeeze, rub or pick comedones
    • hats, sweatbands, and collar of the shirt can irritate the skin and worsen the condition of acne
    • balanced diet can help
    Acne Conglobata

    It is a chronic type and occurs later in life. It occurs in the back, buttocks and chest. The lesions is in the abdomen, shoulders, neck, face, upper arms, and thighs. The acne has discharge that is odorous, serous, and mucoid or purulent.
    When it heals, it leaves a deep keloidal lesions. Treatment is difficult and involves debridement, corticosteroid therapy, oral retinoids and systemic antibiotics.
    Other Forms of acne
    • Acne Fulminans - Teenage boys are always affected by this type of acne and known by the sudden eruption of large, inflamed lesions located at the back and chest.
    • Steatocystoma multiplex - young adults are commonly affected. It is an eruption of different sizes of many lesions in the trunk.
    • Neonatal Acne - occurs mostly in male newborn. It can be found in the nose and cheeks.
    • Drug acne - reaction to agnets like steroids, iodides, and bromides.
    • Occupational Acne - exposure to chemical compounds
    • Acne Cosmetica - it is caused by using of cosmetics
    • Acne Detergicans - caused by frequent washing of the face with soap
    • Acne Mechanica - develops from repeated skin trauma
    • Pomade Acne - common in African-American men. It follows the hairline
