Nursing Care for Ectopic Pregnancy


Ectopic Pregnancy is a pregnancy that occur in extrauterine area with implantation usually occurring in ampulla of the fallopian tubes outer third portion.
Ectopic pregnancy may result to maternal and fetal death and infertility.







Manifestations of ectopic pregnancy
  • Amenorrhea, with positve pregnancy test
  • unilateral lower quadrant (abdominal or pelvic pain)
  • rigid, tender abdomen upon palpation
  • vaginal spotting or bleeding
  • presence of bloody fluid in culdocentesis (aspiration of the cul-de-sac of Douglas)
  • visualization of pelvic organ throug culdoscopy
  • gestational sac in tube in ultrasound

Diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy is made by laparoscopy and ultrasound.

Nursing management for ectopic pregnancy
  • preventive measures for shock
  • prepare for surgery
  • provide emotional support for the grieving process
  • administration of antibiotics and Rhogam as needed.

    Most of the ectopic pregnancies take place in the fallopian tubes, this condition is called as tubular pregnancy. If it is not diagonised on time, the woman can face severe bleeding. One should go for regular checking and should consult doctor. Smoking increases the likelihood of ectopic pregnancy, so one should strictly avoid smoking.

    Women who are pregnant should really exercise extra care regarding their health. It's a risk having complications with pregnancy since you're carrying a baby in the womb.

    Women that are pregnant should be extra careful in what food they eat and exercise as much as possible sa it'll help when they give birth.
