Mechanisms Of Labor (EDFIERRE)

The mechanisms of labor comprises of the following:


  1. Engagement - presenting part of the fetus is fixed in true pelvis

  2. Descent - presenting part progresses through pelvis; level os station

  3. Flexion - descending head meets pelvic floor; chin is brought down to chest

  4. Internal Rotation - fetal head rotates from transverse diameter to anteroposterior diameter to facilitate movement through pelvis

  5. Extension - once fetal head reaches perineum, it extends to be born

  6. Restitution - after delivery of the head, it rotates back to position prior to engagement

  7. External Rotation - shoulder engage and move similarly to head

  8. Expulsion - entire infant emerges from mother
