It is a misconception that body odor is due to perspiration. In fact, sweat in general is odorless and it is healthy because it eliminates toxins. What causes body odor is the interaction of bacteria present in the skin that causes body odor.
Body odor is the smell of bacteria in the body. Also known as "bromidrosis".
Body odor may due of the following:
Excessive sweating - Some people appear to sweat more than others. Others engage in more strenuous activities and thus, they sweat more. Leaving clothes to dry in the skin may encourage bacterial invasion which may cause body odor.
Poor hygiene - Missing a good bath and not using appropriate soaps and cleansers will allow infections to set in.
Infections - Untreated skin infections caused by bacteria or fungi may cause body odor.
Diet and nutrient balance - Onion, garlic and other spicy foods, alcohol consumption may lead to foul smell.
Poor digestion - High fat and low fiber diet may affect the balance of friendly bacteria in our intestines and may cause nutrient imbalance which may aggravate body odor.
Smoking - it causes bad breath and the smell also sticks to clothes and furniture.
Stress and Hormones - in women, body odor seems to be associated with menstruation.
We can prevent or even eliminate body odor by changing clothes after sweating or by not allowing wet clothes to dry in your skin and wearing cotton clothes during summer. Wash clothes with good smelling soap or detergent. Take daily baths and apply cologne after bath, you can also apply moisturizers to dry areas of the body.
We can also prevent body odor by using deodorant daily; baking soda and tawas (alum) are proven remedies for excessive sweating. Use foot spray and change your socks daily or twice a day and do not put socks when your feet are still wet.
Avoid spicy foods and limit alcohol intake, also try to eat more fruits and vegetables especially high in zinc and drink plenty of water. Work in a well ventilated areas and learn to relax because extreme emotions make us sweat.
